About us

The human questions at the heart of medicine

The Hippocratic Society exists to form and sustain clinicians in the practice and pursuit of good medicine. This learning space introduces undergraduate students to that work through literature, philosophy, and conversations about what it means to care for another person.

A curriculum for thoughtful conversation

Our philosophy

Begin with the human person

Medicine asks more of us than technical knowledge. It calls for judgment, character, and attention to the person who needs our care. We begin with questions about human nature and purpose, then consider suffering, mortality, and flourishing. Reading closely gives us a way to examine our assumptions and deepen our understanding of the responsibilities of healing.
Our approach

Read, discuss, and apply

Five modules bring together 31 lessons, including classic and contemporary readings, discussion questions, clinical cases, and module outlines. Read independently, then bring your questions to a shared conversation. Use each clinical case to connect the texts with the practice of medicine.
Human nature. Medicine. Suffering. Death. Flourishing.
